Almost everyone who treks twice says the second was the better one. You already know what to expect, so you spend the hour watching rather than processing — and a different family in a different part of the forest is a genuinely separate experience, not a repeat.

This itinerary puts the two treks in different sectors with a travel day between them, then finishes on Lake Bunyonyi: terraced islands, cool bilharzia-free water and nothing to do. It is the right way to end a trip like this.

Day by day

The 6 days

  1. Day 1

    Kigali to Rushaga

Across the Cyanika border to southern Bwindi, four to five hours.

  2. Day 2

    First gorilla trek, Rushaga

Briefing at 07:00 and your trek in the sector with the most habituated families. Afternoon free.

  3. Day 3

    North through the forest

The drive up through the park to Ruhija or Buhoma — a beautiful road with a good chance of forest elephant sign. Afternoon community walk or the Munyaga River trail.

  4. Day 4

    Second gorilla trek

A different sector, a different family, a different walk. The trek most people remember more clearly.

  5. Day 5

    Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi

Three hours east to the lake. A boat out to the islands in the afternoon, and an early night.

  6. Day 6

    Bunyonyi to Kigali

A slow morning by the water, then three hours to Kigali for an evening flight.

US$2,950per person sharing, from US$2,950 per person sharing in mid-range lodges, both permits included. Swap the second trek for the four-hour habituation experience for US$700 more.

Questions about this trip

Is a second gorilla permit worth US$800?

For most people, yes — it is the single best upgrade to any Bwindi trip, and cheaper than flying back. If budget is tight, a second trek adds more than a better lodge does.

Can both treks be in the same sector?

They can, and you will usually be given a different family. But different sectors mean different terrain and a different forest, which is why we split them.
