If your time is tighter than your budget, this is the trip. Kigali International Airport to Kinigi is about two hours on good tarmac, so you can land in the evening and be at a gorilla briefing at seven the next morning.
The permit is US$1,500, nearly double Uganda's. What the difference buys is time, smooth roads and access to the best lodges in East Africa.
Day by day
Airport pickup and a two-hour drive north through terraced hills with the Virunga volcanoes ahead of you. Afternoon free, or an hour at the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
Briefing at Kinigi at 07:00 with coffee and dancers, family allocation, then a transfer to the trailhead and a walk across farmland to the park wall. Two to seven hours depending on the family, then your hour.
Optional golden monkey tracking or the Dian Fossey tomb hike, then the drive back to Kigali with time for the Genocide Memorial before an evening flight.
Who it suits. Business travellers, short-leave trips, and anyone who wants the logistics to be effortless.
Rangers allocate families at the 07:00 briefing after asking about fitness. Sabyinyo and Agashya are usually the shortest walks; Susa and Karisimbi the hardest. You cannot pre-book a family, but you can and should ask.
Only with a dawn arrival and a late departure, and it leaves no margin if a flight slips. Three is the sensible minimum.
