The gorillas are the same animals. The Virunga massif runs across both borders and families have been known to cross it. What differs is money, time and terrain.

Choose Uganda if…
- You want the trip to cost less. The permit alone saves US$700 per person, and lodges, food and vehicles are cheaper across the board.
- You have a week or more. Uganda's wider safari is genuinely world class — chimpanzee tracking in Kibale, tree-climbing lions in Ishasha, the Kazinga Channel, Murchison Falls.
- You want a choice of walks. Four sectors and around 20 families mean rangers can match a gentle trek to a nervous walker in a way a single park cannot.
- You want four hours instead of one. Habituation permits exist only in Rushaga.
- You are booking late. Uganda simply has more permits.
Choose Rwanda if…
- You have three days. Land at Kigali in the morning, sleep in Musanze, trek the next day, fly out the day after.
- You hate long drives on rough roads. Rwanda's road to the park is tarmac and smooth.
- You want the region's best lodges. Rwanda's top-end properties near Volcanoes are the finest in East Africa, and priced accordingly.
- You are combining it with Kigali itself, which is worth two days.
- Budget is not the deciding factor and you value the ease.
The option most people miss
Fly into Kigali, drive four hours to Bwindi's southern sectors, trek in Uganda on a US$800 permit, and drive back. You get Rwanda's flights and Uganda's price. What about the DR Congo?
Virunga National Park charges US$400 and Kahuzi-Biega is the only place on earth to trek eastern lowland gorillas. Both are extraordinary and both depend entirely on current security in eastern DRC, which changes. So which do we book more of?
Roughly three quarters of our travellers trek in Uganda, and almost all of those who have two weeks do. Almost everyone who books Rwanda is on a short trip, is combining it with business in Kigali, or wants a specific luxury lodge. Both groups tend to come home saying the same thing about the hour itself.

Frequently asked questions
Is gorilla trekking better in Uganda or Rwanda?
Uganda is better value and better for a longer safari; Rwanda is better if you are short on time or want the easiest possible logistics. Uganda's permit is US$800 against Rwanda's US$1,500, and Bwindi has roughly half the world's mountain gorillas across four sectors. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is two hours from an international airport on tarmac the whole way.
Which is easier to walk in?
Rwanda is higher — treks start around 2,500 m — but the terrain is more open, through bamboo and hagenia. Bwindi is lower but denser, steeper underfoot and muddier. Neither is consistently easier; the sector you are assigned matters more than the country.
Can I trek in Uganda but fly into Kigali?
Yes, and many people should. Kigali to Bwindi's Rushaga or Nkuringo sectors is a four to five hour drive through the Cyanika or Katuna border. It saves a day each way against flying into Entebbe. You need a Rwanda visa and a Uganda visa, or the East Africa Tourist Visa.
