Rushaga sits on Bwindi's southern edge, an hour and a half from Kisoro and four to five hours from Kigali. It has more habituated gorilla families than Buhoma, Ruhija and Nkuringo combined, which makes it the sector we turn to most when permits elsewhere are gone.
The gorilla families
Eight or more families are open to tourism here, including Nshongi, Mishaya, Kahungye, Busingye, Bweza, Mucunguzi and Rwigi. Two further groups, Bikingi and Bushaho, are used for the habituation experience. The numbers move: families split when a young silverback leaves with females, which is exactly what has made Rushaga so productive.
With that many groups, rangers have real flexibility at the morning briefing. If you want a shorter walk or a longer one, this is the sector where asking is most likely to get you what you want.
The gorilla habituation experience
This is Rushaga's headline. Instead of one hour with eight visitors, you spend four hours with a semi-habituated family in a group of four, alongside the researchers and trackers who are doing the habituation work. It costs US$1,500, only four permits are issued per day, and it usually means a longer, rougher walk because these families are less predictable.
Is it worth double the price?
For a first gorilla trek, no — the standard hour is extraordinary and US$700 cheaper. For a second visit, for serious photographers, or for anyone who suspects one hour will feel short, it is the best thing we sell. Book it as far ahead as you can; four permits a day disappear fast.
Trekking conditions
Rolling, densely vegetated hills between roughly 1,900 m and 2,300 m. Treks typically run two to six hours round trip. It is not as punishing as Nkuringo, but it is not gentle either — expect steep, muddy sections and thick undergrowth. Porters at US$20 are available at the briefing point and worth taking.
Getting there
- From Kigali: 4–5 hours via the Cyanika border. The most efficient route into Bwindi, and why Rushaga suits short trips.
- From Kisoro: 1.5 hours on murram.
- By air: Entebbe to Kisoro airstrip, about 1 hour 15, then transfer.
- From Entebbe by road: 9–10 hours; break the journey at Lake Mburo.

What else to do
Lake Mutanda is 40 minutes away and one of the loveliest places in Uganda to spend an afternoon — canoe out towards the Virungas at dusk. Rubuguri village walks, a Batwa cultural visit and the drive over to Nkuringo's viewpoint all fill a spare day well.
