Africa's third-highest summit is not a volcano and not a walk-up. The Rwenzoris are a genuine mountain range — permanently wet, deeply strange, hung with moss and giant heather, and carrying the last glaciers in Uganda.

What makes it different
Everything above 3,000 metres looks invented: giant lobelia standing three metres tall, groundsel trees, everlasting flowers and bog that swallows a leg to the knee. This is the Afro-alpine zone at its most extreme, and it is unlike Kilimanjaro or Mount Kenya in almost every respect.
It is also relentlessly wet. Rain, mud and cold are the defining conditions, and gaiters are not optional.
The routes
The Central Circuit from Nyakalengija is the classic seven- to nine-day loop, reaching Margherita for those who want the summit. The Kilembe route from the south is longer, quieter and generally rated the more beautiful. A summit attempt requires basic glacier travel with ropes, crampons and a mountain guide.
Not everyone should aim for the top. A three-day trek to Nyabitaba or the Sine huts gets you into the montane forest and the first of the strange vegetation without the commitment.
Who it suits
Experienced hill walkers with a tolerance for being wet for a week. It is not a bolt-on to a gorilla safari; it is a trip of its own that happens to be in the same country. If you want a mountain day rather than a mountain week, climb Sabyinyo or Muhavura in Mgahinga instead.
Practicalities
Kasese is the gateway, about an hour from Queen Elizabeth and served by an airstrip from Entebbe. Treks are run by licensed operators with mandatory guides and porters. Book several months ahead and train for it properly.

How hard is the Rwenzori trek?
Hard. Multiple days above 4,000 m, deep bog, near-constant rain and a glaciated summit. Fitness alone is not enough — you need to be comfortable being cold and wet for a sustained period.
Can I combine the Rwenzoris with gorilla trekking?
Geographically yes; sensibly, only with three weeks. A full Rwenzori trek is 7–10 days on its own. A three-day taster combines much more easily.
