Kigali is the arrival point for most gorilla trips in the region — for Rwanda's own park and, increasingly, for Uganda's southern sectors. It is also a city worth stopping in rather than passing through, spread over a series of green ridges and unusually calm.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial
More than 250,000 people are buried at the memorial in Gisozi. The exhibition is careful, unflinching and very well made, and it takes two to three hours. Go early in your trip rather than late, and leave time afterwards to sit in the gardens without talking to anyone.

Neighbourhoods and markets
The Nyamirambo Women's Centre runs a walking tour of the city's oldest and liveliest quarter, led by local women, ending with lunch in someone's home. It is the best few hours you can spend in Kigali. Kimironko market is the city's largest — fabric, fruit and a tailor who will make something in an afternoon.
Art, coffee and food
Inema Arts Centre and Niyo Arts Gallery both show contemporary Rwandan work and fund community programmes. Question Coffee and the roasteries around Kacyiru take Rwandan coffee seriously enough to explain the lots. The restaurant scene is genuinely good — Repub Lounge for Rwandan food, and a growing number of places worth a second night.
Practicalities
Kigali is clean, orderly and safe by the standards of most capital cities. Plastic bags are banned nationally and confiscated at the airport. On the last Saturday of each month, Umuganda — a national community-service morning — closes shops and roads until midday; plan around it.

One full day covers the Genocide Memorial and a neighbourhood walk. Two lets you add the markets, the galleries and a proper dinner. Most three-day gorilla itineraries build in a half-day at the end.
Is Kigali safe?
Yes, by most measures notably so, including at night in the central districts. Normal urban common sense applies. See our safety page.
