Volcanoes National Park is situated in northwestern Rwanda, covering an area of 160 km² (62 sq mi) within a lush rainforest. It encompasses five of the eight volcanoes found in the Virunga Mountains: Karisimbi, Bisoke, Muhabura, Gahinga, and Sabyinyo. The park shares its borders with Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Notably, Volcanoes National Park serves as a habitat for both mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Additionally, it holds historical significance as the base for the renowned primatologist, Dian Fossey.
While gorilla trekking remains the primary draw for visitors, there are several other captivating activities available within the park. These include golden monkey trekking, paying respects at Dian Fossey’s grave, embarking on mountain hikes, and exploring the picturesque lakes Ruhondo and Burera. Visitors often find themselves torn between these enticing options, wishing they had more time to experience them all!
Mountain Gorilla Tracking: Volcanoes National Park is one of the four national parks where mountain gorillas can be observed. The other three are Virunga in Congo, Mgahinga, and Bwindi in Uganda. In Mgahinga, there’s a high chance of encountering gorillas. Ten habituated gorilla groups in Rwanda are available for tracking, guided by experienced rangers. Before embarking on this demanding activity, it’s essential to be in good physical shape. Trackers can hire porters to assist with extra luggage for approximately $20. Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost $1500, with part of the proceeds benefiting local communities and infrastructure development around the park. Permits can be obtained directly from the Rwanda Development Board or conveniently through tour operators. The dress code for gorilla trekking includes long-sleeve shirts, trousers, hand gloves, rain jackets, and hiking shoes.
Tracking Golden Monkeys: Golden monkey tracking has become increasingly popular and is now second only to gorilla watching. Observing these endangered monkeys feed, groom, and swing among bamboo trees costs $100. A group can consist of nearly 100 individuals, usually led by a dominant male. Unlike gorillas, golden monkeys don’t venture to high altitudes for food; they prefer bamboo shoots at the base of the volcanoes. While permits for golden monkey tracking don’t require advance booking like gorilla permits, early reservation is recommended. Visiting the Tomb of Dian Fossey: Dian Fossey, a renowned primatologist, significantly reduced poaching of mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. Her courage and determination saved these magnificent creatures from extinction. She pioneered methods to make gorillas comfortable around humans by imitating their sounds and gaining the trust of dominant males. Visitors pay homage to her legacy by visiting her grave and the former Karisoke Research Center, located between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke. The guided hike lasts about 3 hours and costs $75, providing insight into Fossey’s dedication and passion for gorilla conservation.
Hiking Mount Karisimbi Volcano: Mount Karisimbi, an extinct volcano reaching 4,507 meters, is a top tourist attraction in Musanze. The fifth-highest peak in Africa, it requires mental and physical preparation for the 2-day hike. The trail winds through thick forests, with the first stop at 3,700 meters for rest and overnight stay. Hikers then tackle the steep final section early in the morning, reaching the summit. From there, breathtaking views of Volcanoes National Park, snow-capped Rwenzori Mountains, Mount Nyiragongo, and other Virunga volcanoes await.

Mount Bisoke Hike: Mount Bisoke, an extinct volcano, is part of the expansive Virunga Mountain range. It takes approximately three hours to drive from the capital city, Kigali, to the mountain’s base. A day of hiking on Mount Bisoke is relatively easier compared to Karisimbi, but hikers should still be reasonably fit. The hiking permit costs $75, and all activities begin with a briefing at the park headquarters before heading to the starting point. The roads from the headquarters to the trailhead can be muddy and stony, necessitating a four-wheel-drive vehicle. For those with heavy luggage, porters are available for hire at around $15 at the starting point.
Mount Muhabura Hike: Mount Muhabura, standing at 4,127 meters, is one of the most captivating and adventurous volcanoes to climb within Volcanoes National Park. The hike begins at an elevation of 1,200 meters, and along the way, hikers pass through lush green forests and marvel at other volcanoes in the wider Virunga region.
Visiting Twin Lakes Ruhondo and Burera: After engaging in major activities like gorilla trekking, consider relaxing by visiting the twin lakes of Ruhondo and Burera. A boat cruise on these deep lakes offers beautiful bird sightings and panoramic views of the hilly landscape with waterfalls. Exploring the lake islands allows you to connect with locals, learn about their rich heritage, and appreciate the cultural differences that set them apart from other tribes in Rwanda.
Getting to Volcanoes National Park: The park is easily accessible from Kigali, requiring only a two-hour drive to Musanze District in the Northern province of Rwanda. With an early start at 4 am, travelers can even do gorilla trekking in a single day. Public transportation from Kigali or Gisenyi to Musanze is an option, followed by hiring a private car to reach the park headquarters. Alternatively, hiring a tour operator who arranges pick-up from the airport to the Park Headquarters in Kinigi is a convenient choice. Travelers coming from Uganda face a longer drive of approximately 10 hours from Entebbe Airport through Mbarara and Kisoro, eventually reaching the border crossing area.
Best Time to Visit: While activities are available year-round, most visitors prefer the drier periods. From June to mid-September and December to February, the mountain slopes are easier to hike. During the rainy months of March to May and October to November, trails become slippery and muddy. Photographers and nature enthusiasts may find the lush scenery particularly captivating during the rainy season. Combining a safari in Volcanoes National Park with activities in other top Rwandan national parks is also an option.
